Glossary of Terms

Activity A unit of progress in a Learning Design. There are many types of Activity
Admin A user role for managing an Organisation (including creating new child Organisations)
AMS/TOIA An online Assessment system: used by Oxford: to be integrated into LAMS
Anonymity Some tools may wish to make responses anonymous. For example, Q&A may want to show the learner's names against the responses, sometimes it may want to just list the answers with no names. The author will select whether the responses should be anonymous or not.
Authentication Method The method and details a specific user requires to authenticate
Author A user role for creating Learning Designs
Chosen Grouping Activity A type of Grouping Activity where the Groups for the created Grouping must be formed by a Teacher
Class A sub type of Grouping with one normal Group: all the Learners in a lesson, plus a special Group with all the Teachers in the Lesson
Complex Activity A type of Activity that contains other Activities
Define Later Of an Activity: when the content for the Activity must defined in the Lesson (via Monitoring) rather than by the Author
Force Complete When the Teacher forces a Learner to complete an Activity or Activities without the Learner's intervention
Gate Activity A Simple Activity which prevents further progress until certain conditions are met
Group A set of users. If created via the Admin screens it is a permanent group for organising users, Learning Designs and Lessons. It should model a "real world" group of users such as a course, a tutorial class, etc. In previous versions of LAMS this was known as an Organisation.
There are also "temporary" groups that exist within a LAMS lesson only, created by a Random Grouping Activity or a Chosen Grouping Activity. These temporary groups apply within that lesson only and are made up of the learners in the lesson.
Grouping A set of Groups of Learners that can be used with Activities in a Lesson
Grouping Activity A Simple Activity in which a Grouping is created
Learner A user role for engaging in Lessons as a student
Learning Design A learning program plan that can be used to create Lessons (synonym for Learning Sequence)
Learning Library A collection of Activity templates that can be used to make Learning Designs
Lesson A specific instance of a Learning Design and a Class (previously known as Learning Session)
Lock on Finish When the learner finishes the task their responses are locked and the learner cannot change the response. Chat and Forum are the main two tools that will want to control this behaviour - tools like Question and Answer always lock the responses.
Monitoring The act of creating and managing Lessons and Learners in Lessons
Options Activity A Complex Activity in which the Learner chooses which sub Activities to complete (and in which order)
Organisation See Groups
Parallel Activity A Complex Activity in which the sub Activities must be completed in parallel
Permission Gate Activity A type of Gate Activity where progress depends on permission from a Teacher
Portfolio An export of a Learner's contribution to an Activity or an entire Learning Design
Random Grouping Activity A type of Grouping Activity where the Groups for the created Grouping are formed by random choice (according to some parameters: e.g. number of groups or number of learners in each group)
Root Organisation The root of the "permanent" Group tree in a LAMS instance: only visible to the Sysadmin
Schedule Gate Activity A type of Gate Activity where progress depends on time (start time and/or end time)
Sequence Activity A Complex Activity in which the sub Activities must be completed in series
Simple Activity A type of Activity that contain no other Activities
Staff A user role for Staff in an Organisation
Synch Gate Activity A type of Gate Activity where progress depends on all Learners in the Class or Group reaching the activity
Sysadmin A user role for a managing a LAMS instance
Teacher A user role for creating, monitoring and managing Lessons (same as Staff?)
Tool A pluggable software unit that runs a specific learning Tool Activity. Tools may or may not support Grouping
Tool Activity A type of Simple Activity that requires interaction with a specific Tool
Tool Content The content data for a specific instance of Tool Activity
Tool Session Represents the use of a Tool for a Tool Activity for Learner or Group of Learners (depending on whether the associated Tool is Grouped)
Transition Describes the progression of a Learning Design from one Activity to another Activity
WebAuth A system of authentication in which a user is first redirected to a login in server to authenticate and then redirected to the requested resource with their credentials: used by Oxford University
