The multi-tier web based solution will be used for the development of LAMS 2.0. The architecture comprises of:
- Apache web server,
- JBOSS 4.0.2 application server,
- Tomcat 5.x servlet/JSP container (embedded in JBOSS) and
- Java Sun JDK 1.5+
- MySQL 5 database server (see Database Conventions and Datasources).
LAMS is written in JAVA, which in principle makes it operating system independent.
There are some dependencies on JBOSS and Tomcat that would require work if LAMS were to be ported to another application server.
The use of Hibernate mappings could make the application, with some level of configuration, database independent.
LAMS is meant to run on a minimum configuration of Pentium 4 processors with at least 1 GB of RAM and 40 GB of disk space.
LAMS 2.0 will be supported on the following operating systems and browsers:
Windows XP & 2000
IE 6, Firefox 1.5+
Mac OS X
LAMS 2.0 is designed to run on 800x600 monitor for the learner module, and a 1024x800 monitor for the authoring and module. A larger monitor is useful for learners but it will run in 800x600 - on a smaller screen, scrolling will be required to access all sections of the screens.
Other browsers and operating systems may work but are not officially supported.
Design and Implementation Constraints
All the users of the system will be a browser client. The system will be developed for screen resolutions as given above. For screen resolutions below this the users may not be able to view the screens appropriately.
